Maharashtra Government

Today I had come across a news stating that a farmer committed suicide because he didn't get the payment for his land acquired by Maharashtra Government.

The farmer, Subhash Patil, is a resident of village Garakheda - Shiwar of taluka Pachora of Jalgaon, Maharashtra, In 1999, the Government acquired 2.50 acre of Subhash Patil's land to construct a dam. Read again the last sentence it is in 1999 and the current year is 2008. Wandering here and there for the payment, he tired and to get attention of the Government, he with his family started hunger strike on April 14.

Till April 24, after 10 days of the strike, neither the police nor the Government took any action. in the frustration, finally he committed suicide. His son gathered the public and he was taken to hospital. He is charged by police of attempt to commit suicide. Note that there are other farmers in the same boat.

Now few questions will arise in innocent readers of this article:

  • Any person when makes an agreement of purchase / sell, the purchaser gets the possession after paying the full payment to the seller. In this case, the purchaser is the Government and sellers are farmers. Why didn't the Government paid the amount to the farmers on acquisition of the land. Were they facing scarcity of money. Couldn't they manage for such a long period. The period is enough for any businessman to settle the payment.
  • It may happen that they had forgotten to make the payment as they had to do lot of other works too. But didn't they realise even after the farmers were on hunger strike ?
  • OR The poor farmers are not aware of the system that to get the payment from the Government, a transaction below the table has to be done before the transaction over the table.
