Gujarati Businessmen : From Rags To Riches

Every Gujarati believes "No wealth without risk". But few reaches at top, whom the world knows. Naturally, talking about Gujarati Businessmen, the first name comes into mind is Dhirubhai Ambani, because he was a high profile person. But there are other Gujarati businessmen, who are not so famous, but are doing well in their respective business. Let's here consider only listed companies on BSE or NSE.

Nirma : Karshanbhai Patel, as a farmer's son, started selling Soda Ash, is now famous as Detergent King and its client base is 30 Crores.

Adani Group of Companies : In 1988, Mr Adani started a partnership firm. Adani Enterprises Limited is today an international trading house dealing in nearly 70 commodities in more than 60 countries around the world. Its total turnover for year ended Mar 2007 had crossed Rs. 20,000 Crore.

Suzlon Energy : In 1994, to solve problem of electricity shortage for his garment factory, Tulsi Tanti, started windmill in 1995 with just 20 people, made net sale for the year ended on 31-03-2008, was more than 13,000 Crore,

Gujarat Ambuja Exports : Vijay Gupta started the business with a capital of Rs. 25 Lakh. Winner of numerous awards and turnover is about 2,000 Crore.

Financial Technology : Founder of Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd, Jignesh Shah has set an example to young businessmen. On MCX, 55 commodities are traded.

Meghmani Organics Ltd. : Ashish Soparkar and Jayanti Patel started a comapny with Rs. 40,000 which has crossed turnover of Rs. 600 Crore and estimated to cross 1,000 Crore by 2010. It's the first Indian company to get listed at Singapore Exchange.

Sadbhav Engineering : Vishnubhai Patel promoted the firm in 1988. It has completed many huge projects like Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd., Gujarat Highway etc.

AIA Engineering : Bhadresh Shah and family promoted AIA Engineering in 1979. It offers components and services for cement, miningpower generation industries. It's turnover for 12 months ended on Dec 2007 crossed 550 Crore.

and Asian Granito : Promoted with Rs. 4 Lac, Hasmukh Patel's Asian Granito's turnover is 150-200 Crore.

Edelweiss : Promoter Rashesh Shah convinced his father to mortgage their Pedder Road house (Mumbai), in mid 1990s to raise seed capital for his fledgling firm Edelweiss. Its turnover has crossed 680 Crore for 9 months ended on 31-12-2007.
