Diamonds

In the depth of the Earth under high temperature and pressure carbon changes to graphite or diamond. Carbon is very soft (in coal form) and diamond is a hard substance. It's a time consuming process and may take thousand of years.

Artificial diamonds were made, but its cost was very high. But nowadays artificial diamonds are made at cheap rates and are harder than real diamonds.

Diamond is quite costly and so is used for making ornaments. In India, diamonds are used in ornaments if and only if it doesn't contain black spot or crack. it is believed that diamonds may be lucky to some person may be unlucky for others. So before making ornaments from diamonds, during night they are kept under pillow for 2 days and if nothing goes wrong then they are used for the same.

For selecting diamonds for ornaments, one has to check 4 qualities of diamond namely Colour, cut, clarity and carats, popularly known as 4 C's.

Colour : White or colourless diamonds are the best and fetches more price too. When white diamonds are fitted in Gold, it gives the best brightness. But some coloured diamonds are also preferred because of its rarely available colour. Coco-cola coloured diamond is one of them. Because of the scarcity, it fetches more price than equivalent white diamond.

Cut : Best cut diamonds reflect the light more. When a diamond is cut, all its faces should be equal. The illiterate cutter shapes the diamond with all the facets equally. Brilliance of the diamond depends on the cut.

Clarity : If a good cut diamond has some inclusion like black spots or if it has a flaw then the diamond is priced less and is not advisable to use in ornaments.

Carats : Carat is a unit of weight by which diamond is measured. 1 gram equals 5 carats. Each carat is again divided into 100 cents. More the carat (or more the size), it is more valuable.

But the use of diamonds is not limited to making ornaments only. Actually about 1 % of the total production is used in ornaments. Due to its stiffness diamonds are used in many industries mainly to cut other metals, non-metals. It is mainly used in cutting tools made for different industries. In rich countries like America, it is used in belts of dogs and name plate. Its different uses are in cutting, drilling, grinding and polishing.

It's a nice article, but seems too small and lack of deepness.
